Feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of running a business? Do you find yourself drowning in administrative tasks, juggling multiple projects and struggling to find time for the things that matter most?

You’re not alone. I get it. As a multi-passionate, I tend to spread myself out a bit too thin because I love so many different things.

Unfortunately, that’s not sustainable. It’ll leave you burned out before you know it.

That’s where minimalism comes in.

Ever since I watched the documentary Minimalism 6 years ago, I’m hooked on making my life – and my business – as simple as possible. It saved my life – and my bank account.

Let me give you an example.

What do you think of your website? It’s easy to feel like yours isn’t good enough when looking at the beautiful sites your competitors have.

I hated mine for a while. Every day, I was getting more frustrated. It wasn’t fancy enough! The colors didn’t match! I had ZERO professional photos!

These thoughts just circled around my head for about three straight hours while browsing different WordPress themes last Monday.

I wanted a change so bad!!

My website should resemble me, my true self. Yes, I am a disorganized mess at times, just like my website. But only when I let stress get the best of me.

When I take a moment to breathe, to get real and put my feet back on solid ground (like literally putting my feet on grass or sand), I’m the calmest, most present person ever.

I crave simplicity. Minimalism. Those are the values I want to share with the world.

I decided to keep it simple. “Keep it simple, sweetie.” I heard that from a fellow Breaker (I’m participating in a EU-funded business program called The Break Fellowship).

So, I stripped down my website to the bare essentials. I got rid of all the messy colors. And I focused on speed, clarity, and lightness.

I went for black and white, with a bright pink accent. A simple, minimalistic look with a playful touch.

Now I don’t need to hire an expensive designer, and I can easily create landing pages in seconds. That’s all I wanted anyway.

Keep it simple, sexy. Stay true to yourself. Stay true to your budget.

Don’t get swept away by some of the slick sites you see around you.

Yes, having a website is a good thing for your business, but please let go of the fluff if all it does is overwhelm you.

It’ll save you a ton of energy, time, and money.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a philosophy that emphasizes simplicity, clarity, and functionality.

It has gained popularity in recent years as people seek to simplify their lives and reduce clutter. But minimalism is not just for personal life – it can also be applied to business.

6 Ways to simplify your business

Here are 6 ways to apply minimalism to your business:

1. Simplify your products or services

One way to apply minimalism to your business is to simplify your products or services.

This can be hard for multi-passionates, I know. One way to make it easier is to take a deep look in the mirror and see what makes your heart sing.

Identify what drives you and your business. Get clear on your values, mission, and vision.

Sometimes we get lost in a battle between our heads and our hearts. We need them both, but use your head to give your heart what it wants.

2. Set clear boundaries and learn how to say no

It’s also okay to say no to opportunities that don’t align with your priorities or goals.

When you’ve said yes to too many things, your body will let you know when you need to say no. It gets tense, you might have trouble sleeping, and your neck and shoulders start to hurt.

When you feel your face scrunch up like you’ve just eaten a sour lemon, it’s a sign that you need to take a step back and set your priorities.

You may need to let some things go to regain your focus and reduce overwhelm.

3. Cut the fluff and stop comparing

Minimalism is all about focusing on the essentials – the things that are truly important.

What do you really need to grow your business? How can you strip down to the bare essentials? What things can you let go of?

Focus on yourself and your business. What are your core values? Forget about what the competition is doing. Learn from them, but stay focused.

4. Simplify your branding

Your branding is an important part of your business, but it does not have to be complex.

Apply minimalism to your branding by using simple, clean designs and limiting the number of colors and fonts you use.

This can help you create a cohesive and recognizable brand that is easy to remember.

5. Use smart digital tools

Use smart digital tools to automate tasks, manage your finances and time, and communicate with your team and customers. This can help you save time and reduce clutter in your workplace.

Some of my favorites (that you can use for free!):

  • Trello: a project management tool that helps you organize tasks and workflows on a visual board. It allows you to create to-do lists, set deadlines, assign tasks to team members, and track progress. I use it to create content strategies, content plans, and action plans for myself and for my clients.
  • Calendly: a scheduling tool that helps you manage appointments and meetings more efficiently. It allows you to create custom booking pages that sync with your calendar, and lets clients or colleagues schedule meetings with you based on your availability. Calendly Pro also sends automated reminders and confirmation emails, reducing no-shows and last-minute cancellations.
  • Canva: a graphic design tool that allows you to create professional-looking designs and marketing materials, such as social media posts, flyers, and presentations. It offers a wide range of templates, fonts, and graphics, as well as the ability to upload your own images and logos.
  • MailerLite: an email marketing tool that helps you create and send newsletters and promotional emails. It offers features such as email templates, automation workflows, and subscriber segmentation. MailerLite also provides analytics and reporting to track the success of your email campaigns.
  • Google Hangouts: a video conferencing and messaging platform that allows you to host virtual meetings and collaborate with remote teams. It offers features such as screen sharing, recording, and chat, making it easy to communicate and work together in real-time.

6. Connect with yourself

Do a breathing exercise every hour to stay grounded and aligned with your purpose. You can even place a hand on your heart and ask it what it needs right now.
