Are you feeling bored, being housebound? Or are your partner/kids all up in your face now 24/7? Whatever your situation, these bizarre times are not easy on anyone. We all have our ways to escape for a moment. I do this through yoga (healthy), taking online courses (also healthy), or working my bum off (less healthy).

Like, in one weekend, I rebranded my entire business and my brain is just running wild with ideas. It’s quite stressful and it’s driving me crazy. Fortunately, there are a lot of things we can do to stay Zen, like taking an online yoga course.

Or how about improving your skills and knowledge by learning a new language or taking a marketing course? This way, you’ll not only emerge from this crisis stronger than before (“what doesn’t kill you…”), but you’ll also be a bit wiser. Here are 15 ideas for wonderful online courses to do at home, including free ones!

Online courses in yoga

Many yoga teachers are forced to teach yoga online and create digital yoga classes. This means that there’s a huge number of online courses available, which come in quite handy now.

1. Yoga for Beginners

Yoga comes in all shapes and sizes: for beginners, intermediates, and advanced. Are you just starting with yoga? Then check out a Yoga for beginners course. In just a few lessons you will learn the basics of yoga. You will be given breathing exercises, lessons in mindfulness and you will learn the basic yoga asanas (postures).

2. Yoga for Kids

Kids? Let them do yoga! It’s almost as good as doing yoga yourself; by keeping them calm, you keep yourself calm. Most yoga poses for kids are named after animals; there are the flamingo, the monkey, and the lion. It all sounds so cheerful, I almost want to do it myself.

3. Yoga for Surfers

Are you a surfer? Now that most countries have banned surfing, we need to keep working on our fitness and flexibility indoors. The Yoga for Surfers online series with Peggy Hall is a super fun yoga course. Peggy’s smile brightens up your living-room in a second. And the ocean in the background is also very relaxing.

4. Mindfulness for Anxiety and Sleep – with Tara Brach

Tara Brach, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the author of Radical AcceptanceTrue Refuge and Radical Compassion, which I read myself. Or listened to rather, because I bought it as an audiobook. She is an internationally known meditation teacher. Her Mindfulness for Anxiety and Sleep course will teach you a bunch of highly effective tools to reduce stress and relieve anxiety. Highly recommended!

5. Free: EkhartYoga

I’ve been a fan of Esther Ekhart for more than 6 years. One of my favorite yoga teachers, she’s Dutch but teaches in English. Her online yoga studio EkhartYoga offers a huge range of yoga classes taught by different teachers (not free though). All classes are in English and easy to follow. Esther also teaches a special corona ‘finding resilience together’ free live meditation class on YouTube every weekday at 5 pm. Highly recommended! I’m there every day.

Surf

6. Single Fin Surf Coaching Webinars

If you want to keep working on your surfing skills at home, there are (besides Yoga for Surfers) some awesome surf-specific online courses. One of these is the Weekly Webinar of Single Fin Surf Travel. These coaching webinars are designed for longboarders and beginning longboarders. The webinars cost around $20 and are available in Dutch and English.

7. Learn how to set up marketing funnels

Are you a business owner and do you sell products or services? Now is, of course, the right time to throw your business online, if you haven’t already done so. You need to learn how to set up an effective marketing funnel.

8. Content Marketing

Content marketing, that’s my department! Content marketing includes planning, creating, and sharing content to generate leads (potential customers) for your products or services. You do this through blogging, video marketing, visuals, or podcasts. Learn how to attract leads by following a course in content marketing.

9. Free: Yoast Online SEO Training

Do you run your own website? Or are you a content writer as well? If you don’t already, then you need to learn what SEO (search engine optimization – aka whether you score high in Google) is. There’s a lot more to writing blog posts or copy than what most people think there is. Your blog post or webpage needs to rank high in Google (or other search engines) for people to find it. Yoast offers a free SEO basics training.

10. Free: Moz Academy SEO courses

Moz is the guru of SEO and because of the coronavirus, they temporarily give a 100% discount on their SEO online courses. Use the code “wegotthis”. This means that you can take an online course for free. Take a look at Moz Academy SEO courses.

Foreign Language

11. Learn Spanish

Hablas Español? Learn a new language, like Spanish! With a Spanish for Beginners course, you’ll learn how to participate in a Spanish conversation in no-time (provided your conversation partner talks slowly and doesn’t start a political debate). Quite useful if you’re holidaying in Spain or Latin America later this year (hopefully) and you need to know what the road signs or menus say.

Photography

12. Online course Lightroom Classic CC

Taking an online course in photography is fun for everyone. Whether you’re a professional or amateur photographer who uses photos for your social media or website, you need to know how to edit and enhance photos. An Adobe Lightroom Classic CC course teaches you how to use Lightroom Classic CC to make your photos ten times more beautiful.

Music

13. Finally learn how to play the guitar

Always wanted to learn how to play the guitar? Why is this such a big deal to so many people? And why do we feel guilty about not being able to play yet? Or is this just me? Anyway, if you finally want to take the bull by the horns, sign up for a Classical Guitar Essentials course.

Wellness & Health

14. Free: Food for Thought – The Relationship Between Food, Gut, and Brain

Class Central is an excellent website offering hundreds of (partly) free online courses created by colleges and universities all over the world. I have enrolled in the Food for Thought course. In this course, you will learn how the brain works, how emotions and thoughts influence your food choice, how nutritional deficiencies and diets affect your brain, and much more.

15. Free: Buddhism and Modern Psychology

This free course discusses some contra-intuitive Buddhist doctrines: that the ‘self’ does not exist and that much of our perceived reality is an illusion. They discuss whether these claims, no matter how crazy they may sound, make sense in modern psychology. Can meditation make us both happier and better people?

Well, I hope I gave you enough ideas for awesome online courses! Which do you like best? And do you know another course that should be included in this list? Let me know in the comments below.
