Hi, I’m Jess.
A Dutchie, 37 years young, and my life revolves around health, surf, and yoga (and my cat, Bassie).
This wasn’t always the case. I used to drink a LOT. I used to party so hard that I woke up the next day with parts of my teeth missing. (tip: don’t hold a vodka bottle close to your mouth when someone is telling you a joke).
I drank because it was a way for me to socialize. But also because it was a way for me to drown my emotions and anxiety. Because my emotions are freakin strong, which isn’t always fun.
When my dad died (of depression), twenty-one years ago, it felt like a part of me died. Which it did.
I can feel it return to me whenever I dream about him. I wake up, feeling whole for 2 secs, and then it’s gone. Twenty-one years later, I still experience that.
I also used to suffer from a panic disorder – due to the trauma of my dad’s sickness and death, and too much stress. The alcohol made that worse.
Then, at age 26, I started surfing and doing yoga.
Four years later, during my yoga teacher training, I finally learned how to use my breath in order to calm my body and mind down.
When I do yoga and meditate, I experience wholeness and peace again. And ✨so✨ much more. It’s actually a really quick way to release happy hormones.
But, it’s also a way to feel sadness.
It may seem strange, but sometimes, we just need to have a good long cry.
It’s all good, whatever happens on the mat, is what needs to happen.
Remember: it’s okay to not be okay.
This is why I want to share my yoga practice & teachings with you. It helped/helps me through some seriously dark times, and I hope it can help you, too.
